Dragon Khan is one of Europe’s most iconic steel roller coasters and a flagship attraction of PortAventura Park in Salou, Spain. Opened on May 2, 1995, it was built by the renowned Swiss manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) and quickly became famous for its imposing structure, smooth ride, and record-breaking number of inversions at the time. With a maximum height of around 45 meters and a track length of approximately 1,269 meters, Dragon Khan dominates the skyline of the China area of the park, framed by vibrant red track and teal supports that reflect its themed dragon motif.
The ride begins with a powerful lift hill that sets the stage for an exhilarating drop, propelling trains to speeds of over 100 km/h. Riders are immediately plunged into an intense sequence of eight inversions, including a vertical loop, diving loop, zero-g roll, cobra roll, and corkscrews. These elements are carefully designed to deliver a mix of high g-forces, disorienting rotations, and thrilling airtime, ensuring there is little room for relaxation during the ride’s one minute and forty-five second duration.
Each train seats 28 riders in a traditional sit-down arrangement, with three trains capable of running simultaneously to maximize throughput. The minimum rider height is 140 cm, making it accessible to a wide range of thrill seekers. Beyond its technical specifications, Dragon Khan is widely regarded as a landmark in roller coaster design, blending B&M’s engineering expertise with immersive theming. Decades after its debut, it remains a must-ride for coaster enthusiasts visiting Spain.
